lunch - 7.31.26

I’ve been figuring out computer problems all week.  Couldn’t even make my deadlines.  So today I was very happy to take a break at a birthday party at lunch with friends.  The women were all my age and we shared our sins from our past. The place is one of my favorites – I haven’t visited for years – great food, on the river, usually quiet.

So it wasn’t quiet today.   There were a whole bunch of former generals having lunch and talking at the top of their voices.  One by one they apologized to us for the fact that they are old and hard of hearing, but they were so charming it suited the teentire afternoon.

On the way back the car radio told me about the agreement the US has made with Hamas.  How absolutely antithetical to my retro lunch.  At lunch everyone was believable, honest, even though they were o

my father-in-law died before he could help me figure out all the intricies of a website and i have beem stuck with thirty years without someone who can help me figure out how to keep up this website.  Even my husband becomes suddenly deaf when I mention problems with my website.  He helps me with everything else, but I’m sure that he knows that guy who helped me set this up a decade or so ago before he disappeared into the world of extreme religion.and sometimes I call him in desperation but he doesn’t really know what I did to screw things up.

in the end the answer is simple and I will discover it – but my life, my life, is totally disappearing behind my back as I progress in this world of passwords.  have patience with me please.  i’ll get it right eventually.

Lucky to Fly - 7.28.26

It’s been almost a day since we’ve been back and already I’ve spoken to three friends who are dying to go on vacation, but fear their plans will fall apart.  what US war planes will  take the place of the vehicle to a break from the constant tension here?  When will war come to us and how will it end?  Will we make it to elections and will we be able to turn our policies around in the right way?  Will we be allowed to become moral people again?

That is my deepest wish.

i'm back baby - 7.28.26

Anything is now possible.  I can solve my own problems.  I seem to have fixed my computer with only one sleepless night and a Gemini.

But now the story of our Berlin Airport event seems stale.  Still, I must tell it to you.  We arrived in Berlin early in the morning – for me it was after a sleepless night of travel fever and an uncomfortable flight with food i couldn’t stand (Everyone else was fine).   So I was not in a condition to appreciate the beauty of the modern new airport in Berlin. And when the automatic border control machines didn’t work, we found the border control with real people in them almost totally unmanned.  The border control room filled up with people, mostly Arab and Jew, and border control replacement officers were called in and slowly appeared.  But we got to our destination over 2 hours late.  Our friend, who by contrast came in by train from Amsterdam, experienced no border checks and enjoyed every minute of her train ride to Berlin.

This delay was nothing compared to our experience upon leaving Berlin.

The first part was to some extent our fault.  We assumed that once we had been checked and our cases had passed security we could go to breakfast and then board the flight.  But, after we were not allowed to enter the boarding flight area, we discovered that there was another passport control to go through at the other end of the airport.

Apparently no one knew this either, because the passport control was full of aisles of people waiting to be allowed in to their boarding areas.  The boys behind me estimated well over a hundred people, with 4 officers to check them in.  But more officers were called and in less than an hour we were on our way back through the entire airport to our boarding area.

There we found another line for security checks, and because our friend complained of our advanced age, we were allowed to move up the line. But I’ll bet those generous people cursed the moment they allowed their courtesy to overcome their desire to board as soon as possible.   Because when we stuffed in our bags on the conveyor belt, they stopped at the x-ray machine and chaos began.

something was wrong with our bags.  The three young security officers were told to stop us and question us as the x-ray officer raged over an unknown suspicious article in our hand luggage.

“let me open it,” Ezi said, “maybe it’s that little fan i bought.” but the luggage was imprisoned in the x-ray machine, and we had to wait an hour for the bomb squad to look, laugh, and go off for a beer.

The plane waited two hours for us and all the people waiting in line for us to free the x-ray machine.

What I learned:  the young officers were following the orders of the x-ray officer, who disappeared almost immediately after barking his commands.  They were humane, a bit embarrassed, and did everything possible to ease the situation, but not free to make their own decisions.

We – on the other hand – were stupid for putting the two-inch fan in the trolley, even though we were following the orders of the airline company about not putting batteries in our stored luggage.

As I write this I hear Ezi shouting about something else on the phone – something he would have handled easily had we not been harassed so badly the day before.  Clearly we have been damaged by this experience.

lost in berlin airport - 7.27.26

We should have been more careful.  After the extended experience of entering Berlin through the new airport, where the failure of  the automatic pastport control  wresulted in hour-long lines, we should have realized that the apparent simplicity of border control had to be a mistake.  We went through, checked a bag and carried our trollies and backpacks to the silent lounge for breakfast.  Then we wandered to the gate, only to find ourselves locked out.

Ah, it slowly emerged, we would have to speed to the other corner of the airport to go through passport check and security again – a place almost impossible to find for lack of directions.  But once we arrived, we found hundreds of people impatiently in line.  The new automatic check-in was not working and dozens of passport clerks had been called in to ease the situation.  “We’ll miss our flights,” we pleased, but everyone else was saying the same things.

Eventually we made it to baggage inspection.  And a few people actually let us in first because of our advanced age

But that’s when our troubles began.  There was something in our bags that aroused enormous suspicion, and the officer in charge alerted that inspection officers who eventually alerted the entire bomb squad not to allow our bags out of the x-ray machine.

What could it be?  Ezi was at a loss to explain.  Perhaps it was the minifan he brought, or the many chords and wires to connect the computer?  There a lipstick i bought. … We stood there answering innumerable questions as the bomb squad got organized.  It did no good to offer to blow up with our suitcases so that the hundreds of passengers waiting in line could at least pass through.

And of course we became the object of great anger because the plane was being held up.

The young officers who were only following orders brought us chairs, explained again and again that they had to follow the protocol, and after a few hours, were allowed to give up and let us through.

Ezi finally figured out that the source of the alarm must have been his mini pocket flashlight.

But the source was never identified.

And then we were allowed onto the plane, which of course had to wait until a new time was made available for take off.  All in all we took off after 3-4 hours, arrived at night, and have been asleep since.

I  await an apology.

german coming back - 7.25.26

Despite repeated jeers from my partner, I am remembering German.  When I was little a German-speaking family lived with us and at first we laughed at their language, and then began to speak it – probably with a Yiddish accent.  But we made ourselves understood.  And although I spent days looking at his chopped-off fingers (explained to me as the punishment for refusing to make weapons in forced labor) I grew to love him.

last night, for instance, the taxi driver asked me as I was leaving – how I enjoyed the concert.  Like a child I answered “I didn’t.”  He answered me as to a child, “Why my dear? It is a very famous cathedral.” “It wasn’t clear, ” I said, and stumbled over what I would have said as a music critic.  Then I apologized that I spoke childishly and he smiled like my old friend Ignaz.  It was my moment of love.
