b is for beach.  where we can forget reality for a while.  And now we have a lot to forget.  Although we can not keep away from the news – wondering who’s running the country while Bibi is watching his trial going on in Brighton from the court in Tel Aviv, wondering what’s going on in Belarus, wondering how much of a mess is going on in the government, how much good the protests are – who’s running the show.

The restaurant we go to at the beach is pretty boring as far as good is concerned, but I have always loved the waiters.  And the beach.  I need the beach.

yam asal, yam basal, the saying in Arabic goes.  One day honey, one day onion.  And you never know which day, which hour the onion is going to make you cry. It’s not just the crazy government and the protests, the absence of leadership, the weakness of the political military leadership, the disintegration of the economy.  It’s also the craziness of our age – going from doctor to doctor at all hours, unexpected visits from visitors abroad who suddenly decide that if they don’t travel now – after covid – they’ll never travel.  And our own travels.  And our simchas – birthdays, bar mitzvahs, sleepovers, etc…  And our senile friends – making plans and disappearing.

I haven’t been writing about the terror in the West Bank.  Because I can’t write about what I haven’t seen.  But this situation was inevitable.  And frightening.  When I’m at a demonstration I have hope – when I watch the news, I’m desperate.  My grandnothers, my aunts and uncles and cousins were slaughtered like that. And for similar reasons.

Here is the poster for a book I participated in – written by people who have one thing in common – they research subjects connected to the holocaust.  The editors collected us and had us write about our experiences and they are very different and quite amazing.  It took a lot out of me.  Order it for your library, read it, review it.  It’s worth it.

I must have pushed away half a dozen appointments today in order to be ready to celebrate my daughter’s birthday whenever she is free today.  Anyway I am too lazy to make more than one or two appointments a day because I’m too lazy.  So I put off all talks about book launchings, visits with friends, doctors, etc. and then the kids are all sick.  So all plans cancelled and I’m going for a walk.

We are walking through the enormous protest demonstration, sweating and claustrophobic,  looking for t-shirts that express exactly where we are in this mess.  I’ve bought 5 t-shirts and given them to our neices – all with wise statements that I totally agree with.  But it was only when I found the one that demands a constitution did I grab it.  The Declaration of Independence is supposed to be the basis for the constitution – guarenteeing equality for all – and we can’t get it through.

Up north the Hizballah is finishing up exploding the mines we put on the border to keep them out.  In the east, the settlers are running riot firing on Arab citizens, on the Egyptian border we forgot to lock the gate. As William Carlos Williams wrote:

No one
to witness
and adjust, no one to drive the car
