israeli politics

If Tel Aviv has a population of about half a million, and over 150 thousand people were holding flags in the center of the city and shouting in union “democracy,” what does this mean?  This is not just about certain rules being crammed down our necks every day, or about politicians who should be in jail.  This is about the concept of democracy, and to my mind it should not be only an Israeli issue or even just an issue for Jews around the world.  It is about the danger to democracy all over the world.  My Hungarian friends, my Polish friends, my Italian friends, and my American friends all know the terrible threats to democracy being faced and the delicate freedom to protest that can disappear in a moment.  Tell the world to pay attention to the freedom we have and guard it carefully!

it explains what even I – a sleep-deprived old lady overwhelmed with work am on my way out to demonstrate in  the streets of Tel Aviv.  My only criticism of this video is that is it addressed to Jews.  This reliance on the Jewish community and belief that the country of Israel is only important to Jewish people and Jewish nations is simply wrong,  We have to keep fighting for democracy all over the world.  Democracy is a very fragile enterprise, and can fall world-wide in a moment.

We’ve had enough of funerals, demonstrations, and illness.  Just for a break, we went to see what was done with the Imperial Hotel on Trumpeldor, scheduled for demolition in the summer.  Each room was given to a different artist to design and decorate.  What a pleasure to experience such imagination and innovation!

how we hunger for it.  It’s really like escaping to another world.

Visit before it disappears on May 3!

I was trying to decide whether to see Leopoldstadt in New York or Habima – in the original language or near home.  When I saw the price of the tickets I decided to take my discount and see it here.  And what a surprise! Not that it was terribly presented but it is so much more complex to talk of Zionism and the holocaust in Hebrew than in English.  Especially when the main character is played by an Arab actor.  All the ideas of Tom Stoppard take on different dimensions.  Now I have to see it in New York.

Because my friend was in this film, we went to the opening night last night of Prevednik (Hebrew title: Zadik) or The Righteous Gentile, about a Russian Officer, Nicolai Kisliov, who saved hundreds of Jews in WWII. Since it’s in Russian with Hebrew subtitles and it’s almost three hours long, this is not for everyone, but it is a riveting film.

it’s also a bit of a propaganda film about the cruelty of Germans and the kindness of Russians in the war.

(My friend’s part about the court in Israel deciding whether to select this officer as a righteous gentile was also cut)
