Thank you for your excellent articles on Mellville and The Lost Generation. You write so beautifully and Melville and the whole group of writers around Concord MA fascinate. me. I recommend Susan Cheever’s American Bloomsbury.
I did read Bartleby The Scribner when I was in college. I never got around to reading Moby Dick but you have inspired me to do so. As I understand Herman Melville was very influenced by the Scarlett Letter and that he wanted to try and write a very different kind of passionate sea novel which turned out to be Moby Dick. I didn’t know his life ended so sadly, particularly with his sons.
I wish you and your family a happy New Year and that there can be a miracle and the hostages will be released and Hamas and Hezbollah defeated which is necessary if there is to be peace.
