kindle - 14.4.25

I’ve been fiddling with kindle for the past few days – editing old books and putting up new ones.  Why not?  I’m trying not to submit to presses and getting ghosted.  Maybe someone will like a book and write a review.  At the moment I’m into this one: Survivors

it should be interesting if uneven. and here’s a little secret – on the bottom right of this cover pixture of survivors are my brother and me.

Haim Grade - 4.13.25

I began reading the new book that Lily brought my from New York and remembered suddenly the visit he had with my parents and the Jewish Community Center in the ’50’s.  Grade is the short one in the middle and my father is the dandy on his left.  My mother is wearing the light colored dress.  Grade’s book, that has only been released in English this month, is a pleasure to read.

staying calm - 4.13.25

We went to a great resort – with at least 500 Druze tending to our every need, every desire, and I really wanted to tell you all the details.  But the computer said I was doing everything wrong and i was being invaded by aliens and i wouldn’t be able to fix it by myself and i might as well throw the whole machine in the Kinneret.

So the first thing i did when i came home was to check the computer, buy a couple of those amazing towels online that it seems only hotels in israel have, and open the website.  it’s fine.

So now we can say finally that our vacation was complete – with all the kids here for the seder – hagaddahs, cippahs. and shmura matzo provided by the Druze waiters, every table conducting their own seder when they felt like it – and a good time had by all.

The hotel was the Setai – and it felt like the White Lotus – except the water was cold, so we all gathered in the jacuzzi.  And there were no murders there that I know of.

And the zoom didn’t work right either.

they should have taken our electronic equipment away when we checked in.

hag sameach!

The Empty Chair - 4.10.25

The empty chair, the empty plate, the empty soup bowl.  Many many Israelis don’t even want to think about the seder coming up because it will remind us of those missing – those in tunnels, in hospitals, in mourning.  Apparently there are more people leaving the country for the holiday today than ever -some because they are stir-crazy, others because they can’t take the thought of enjoying themselves in this situation.  And still others because they are sure all the saber rattling on the part of Trump means something terrible – for us.

so set a place for us at the table, please –

lickin - 9.4.25

I’m trying so hard not to talk about politics – but it’s ruling our lives now.  And I can’t get that statement the president of the U.S. made about how all these countries are kissing his ass.  It reminds me of Joseph and his dreams of everyone bowing down to him, dreams that so infuriated his brothers they felt they had to get rid of him.

And there are so many things going wrong with politics in my country it is amazing that I would pay attention to some other leader.  But of course the world is affected by what the president of the US does or doesn’t do, and our p.m. does his best to imitate  the behavior of the president.

I just hope there isn’t an influence on bullies in the schoolyard…

wine Bar in the Evening - 8.4.25

Picture a street filled with tables and chairs and young people having a wonderful time.  There are couples, and groups of friends, the music is not too loud, and the focus is on food and drink.  But very early in the evening I caught sight of a very nice looking guy with a metal leg, and my eyes followed him as he walked slowly with his crutch over to a long table of young men.  There was another young man with a cast, but all together they seemed to be having a rousing good time – without alcohol.  I became convinced these guys had served very recently in the front. And while we are all celebrating, we know exactly what is going on in the war, in the knesset, in court, in the country, in the world.  How do we do it?
